8th and 9th Meetings of the Expert Working Group for the Extrapolation Database

Teleconferences, 2025-10-29/30 and 2026-04-08/09

The Expert Working Group (EWG) for the Extrapolation Database assists the EPPO Secretariat on the further development of a searchable database to retrieve extrapolation possibilities for efficacy evaluation of plant protection products (PPPs). The EWG met remotely on 2025-10-29/30 and 2026-04-08/09. The meeting was attended by the EPPO Scientific Officers Mr Lucchesi (Chair) and Mr Martínez Pérez and experts from seven EPPO countries. The list of members and the Terms of Reference of the EWG is available on the EPPO website.

The EWG continued to develop the EPPO Database on PPP Data Extrapolation, available since 2024. The Database provides a detailed list of acceptable extrapolations for PPPs for regulatory authorities and applicants in the EPPO countries. The extrapolation possibilities listed in the Database are applied in the context of the registration of PPPs for minor uses and should be used in conjunction with the recommendations in the EPPO Standard PP 1/257 Efficacy and crop safety extrapolations for minor uses.

Since the last Database update, more than 70 extrapolation possibilities for effectiveness of fungicides and insecticides were updated or entered in the Database, including those against slugs, in accordance with EPPO Standard PP 1/095 Slugs. More possibilities for minor uses are expected to be updated by the end of the year.

The work during these EWG meetings included two main tasks:

  1. Revision and improvement of the content of the Database. Numerous pending issues for eight crop groups for fungicides and seven crop groups for insecticides were discussed and resolved.
  2. Consideration of the extension of the Database to major uses extrapolation possibilities according to the new recently adopted EPPO Standard PP 1/331 Principles of efficacy extrapolations for major uses. Major uses extrapolation possibilities for foliar and ear diseases in cereal and for herbicides in cereal and grassland were discussed. A clear plan for the development of the database to include major uses extrapolation has been established.

The outcome of this meeting will be presented to the EPPO Panel for the Efficacy Evaluation of Fungicides and Insecticides and the EPPO Panel for the Efficacy Evaluation of Herbicides and Plant Growth Regulators and ultimately, to the EPPO Panel on General Standards for Efficacy Evaluation, which oversees the activities of this EWG.

The EWG will next meet on the 2026-09-25 (teleconference).

Users may now propose new extrapolation possibilities and suggest improvements to the existing ones for EPPO’s consideration for potential inclusion in the Database. For further guidance, please consult the EPPO Database on PPP Data Extrapolation.
