EPPO Conference on Phytophthora ramorum and other forest pests

Falmouth, Cornwall, GB, 2005-10-05/07

EPPO organized a Conference on Phytophthora ramorum and other forest pests in Falmouth (GB). It was attended by 76 participants from 24 countries.

Elements on the current situation, phytosanitary measures in place, and control of Phytophthora ramorum were presented. Information on P. kernoviae a new aggressive Phytophthora, recently detected in United Kingdom was also provided. The Conference recommended that EPPO should develop a diagnostic protocol and conduct a pest risk analysis on this emerging pest.

Information was also provided on forest pest eradication programmes in the region (Anoplophora glabripennis, Anoplophora chinensis) and on a fungi recently detected in Slovenia (Eutypella canker). The Conference recommended that this pest should be added to the EPPO Alert list.

A presentation on the analysis of the interceptions of non-indigenous species in Europe during 1995-2005 was made. During the discussion, participants stressed that importation of large plants from other parts of the world presented phytosanitary risks and that such risks should be evaluated further and phytosanitary measures identified.
