17th meeting of the ad hoc Panel on Invasive Alien Species

Mèze (FR), 2012-06-05/07

The 17th meeting of the ad hoc Panel on Invasive Alien Species took place in Mèze (FR) on 2012-06-05/07 at the kind invitation of the French NPPO and of the City of Mèze. The activities of this EPPO Panel were reported in the local press (Midi Libre Mèze and Midi Libre Sète), as a response to the EPPO press release sent shortly before the meeting.

Mr Branquart informed the Panel about the situation of invasive alien species in Belgium (pdf). Mr Fernandez-Galiano gave a presentation on the Codes of conduct currently being developed within the framework of the Bern Convention.

The Panel discussed country comments received on the prioritization process for invasive alien plants. This document was approved and it is hoped that it will be adopted as an EPPO Standard this year. The outcome of this prioritization process will be to reformulate the EPPO Lists of invasive alien plants, and identify priorities for Pest Risk Analysis (PRA). The Panel considered that the next EPPO PRA should be performed on Parthenium hysterophorus. In the EPPO region, this species is only recorded in Israel and there is considerable information on its invasive behaviour worldwide. A short PRA will be carried out to study the impacts that this species may have in the EPPO region.

The Panel also discussed the draft Standard on the management of invasive alien aquatic plants currently under preparation, and made several improvements with the aim that it will be adopted in 2013.

The Panel also suggested that guidelines should be developed on criteria indicating that a plant exhibits an invasive behaviour, and on how key data should be collected and reported for an efficient early warning.

The Panel also had the opportunity to make a field trip and to see Periploca graeca (Asclepiadaceae) invading the sand dunes of the Bagnas natural reserve. A visit to the Salagou Lake also provided the opportunity to see the invasive alien aquatic plant Lagarosiphon major (Hydrocharitaceae), as well as the results of the eradication of Cylindropuntia rosea (Cactaceae).
